Stump the Shooter
I get a lot of e-mails from amateur and student photographers all over the world, generally looking for advice on becoming a working photographer. I love geeking out about photography, so I thought the subject would make a cool forum topic as well! This is a place for pros and non-pros to mingle and share some knowledge.

Great organized page and photos are awesome. I'd love to get out of bed in the morning and go to an assignment, especially getting to know and experience new things.

Thanks! You should issue assignments for yourself; it's a great way to force yourself to shoot new things!

Darren, thanks for taking the time to come around my page in here and check things out. I really appreciate it! I feel like I'm always learning when I come to your page(s)! This is a good thing! =)

The dates in here seem off somehow, as do the ones on your new frontpage. They're all from 2007? A glitch somehow...?

So if "The Vendanator" is out of town, you have free time to go shoot....correct?
Apr 14, 2008 7:40 AM
After thoughful consideration and going through all of your shots....we hate you.

Amazing stuff bro. Way to go.

Hi Darren

I'm new to Uber from dA and just getting the hang of it. I just wanted to compliment you on your page. I think it's great that you take the time to talk to less experienced shooters and share the love!
You've got some really great pictures and an interesting blog. I look forward to reading and seeing more of your work.

Trained Roaches and CG Artists Need Apply
As soon as my writer friend Le delivers his story outline to me, I'm going to be developing a screenplay for a short film that I will be shooting, hopefully beginning sometime in August.

The plan is to eventually turn it into a feature-length piece as well, but I'm starting with the short. It's a rather interesting story that Le wrote several years ago, but I don't think he ever finished it. And then, he lost it. A couple weeks ago, over coffee, he was telling me about the story, and I found it so interesting that I insisted he rewrite it and hand it over so I could make a film out of it.

The only catch is that I'm going to have to rely on a modicum of special effects work, and for that I need a CG specialist. You see, part of the film requires a trained cockroach, and since I don't believe those really exist, it looks like I'm going to need a CG roach. Not a cartoonish roach, but a photorealistic roach that will also need to move realistically on film. It needs to look like a real roach in a real world.

I do know a bit about 3D animation, but I'm nowhere near good enough to tackle this job. Essentially, I will be supplying the CG artist with some live action footage, and he/she will be responsible for inserting said roach into the world and making it appear as though it was really going walkabout in the city.

There is only one thing that is going to make this a very difficult task: the budget. As of this post, it is planted firmly at "zero". So, if anyone knows a charitable CG specialist, please tell them that I'd love to speak to them!

Good luck!

D, did you forget your mate Graham is a master at this stuff?

Graham is very busy.

Ok, I found some roaches in my shed. I was going to gas and kill them but I could be persuaded to train them for a sizable supply of Shiner.
Posted by Darren Aba... on
Erm... Deal. If you can train those bastards, I'll ship you all the Shiner you want.

Roaches make me want to vomit. But, I hope you find one. Hey, it's almost your birthday...again.

Yes, once again, it is nearly my birthday. What are you going to get me?

Have a look at the cgtalk.com forums .. there might be some guys willing to do the job. Good Luck bro !
Posted by Darren Aba... on
I will check that out. Thanks man!

Hmm... when do you need it by? I might be able to find someone for you who might be willing to do it just to get their name in the credits and put that they were in a feature film, after i'm at an Arts Institute who have one of the best animation courses in the world, certainly one of the best in Europe.

I'm in no hurry for it. It's a personal project, so I am working with the luxury of a nonexistent deadline. Let me know if you happen to find someone willing to help! I appreciate the effort mate!

i get back to the AIB in September, I'll put up a bulletin for you - there's no doubt that there'll be someone who'll want the job and able to do what you want =D

Good luck Darren, sounds like it should be a lot of fun. Me and a friend made a short film a few years ago and it was great fun and lots of people helped for food and expenses. Cost us a bit in money though! I have loads of books on filmmaking - let me know if you need any!
Look forward to hearing how you get on.

I've dabbled in cinematography as a hobby for a few years. I already have my camera rig built, for the most part (still need a matte box) and that is my biggest expense. Other than that, I have mates who will work for beer, and I don't think any of the actors in San Antonio ever work for money. ;-)

Wow man good luck...I recommend putting up a listing on craigslist LA, and looking at the directory over at mandy.com. Sounds like an interesting project, I'll be on the lookout for updates.
